Slicin' up Eye Balls

If there's one thing in the world I love the most, it's the road trip.

Last Saturday SB & I drove out to Long Island to see Pixies in Huntington on their Lost Cities tour.

Thank God for the GPS otherwise we'd still be driving in circles down there! Waayyyy too many parkways and highways and bypasses down there for this suburbanite.

We stayed at the Executive Inn in Westbury, it was perfectly cromulent.

Pixies were better than amazing!!!! They performed "Doolittle" in it's entirety. Great great stuff!

The next day we hit up Trader Joe's, though they are essentially the same, each store offers a little something different to the patrons. Damn, I love Trader Joe's!

We took the Taconic Parkway home, beautiful drive w/ no cars. This weekend reeked of awesomeness!

Mr. Kamikaze

So, I was tooling around Schenectady & I saw a happy group of middle school kids at the playground. Then I felt a great sadness! Those kids don't know a thing about Devo. How could someone skip rope and not being singing "Beautiful World" at the top of their lungs?

Sigh :-( So glad I'm not a kid!

The Voice of God

Last week, SB & I had date night. A leisurely stop at Van's Vietnamese for my usual summer rolls. SB had the spring rolls. As I wasn't in a pho mood, I had the grilled lemon grass chicken. Moist and delicious!

Onto Barnes & (Ig)Noble for a tasty treat. I wanted a Vivanno but they have a limited menu at the B&N Starbucks. So I reluctantly settled for a gigantic chocolate chip and peanut butter cup cookie & perused the magazine section.

And the best was saved for last, Laurie Anderson at EMPAC. For those of you not in the know, Laurie is a musician, artist and inventor. I got her seminal and groundbreaking CD "Big Science" the autumn of 2001. To say it resonated and scared me all at the same time, would be an understatement. I got to her perform that following year. It was all spoken word, though in my eyes it seemed like storytelling. Dark but funny.

This time around, Ms. Anderson was show casing her new live piece "Delusion". She played her electric violin (which she invented!) & synthesiser while small film clips played in the background. She spoke about death and punctuation and the decline of America. What freaked me out was her scary voice modulator! It sounded like a demonic god. Oh and I should mention, Laurie has a voice like molasses. Slow and deliberate.

It was the first time I had been to EMPAC. It's like being inside a piece of modern/post-modern sculpture.

Check out her new CD "Homeland"!

Nom de Plume

For those of you not in the know, I chose my blogger name because I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of Liz Phair. If you've never heard her music before, please, in the name of all that is good and holy, go listen to her. She rarely disappoints.

Liz's 1st three CD's, "Exile in Guyville", "Whip-Smart" and "Juvenilia", came out on the great and mighty independent label Matador Records. The sound was stripped down, raw, she swore a lot, and at the risk of sounding like a music critic cliche, the lyrics were confessional style. Liz was the cool indie queen of Chicago.

Then there was a long 3 year period before I could purchase "whitechocolatespaceegg" in 1998. This time around Liz had gone to Capital Records, the big boys. I could tell there was some subtle changes to this record but it was still Liz and she was still an amazing song writer.

Then Liz went all quiet until 2003 when she released her self titled album, though she not so secretly refers to it as the "Liz Phair: Back Slash". This was my least favourite album, too polished, too slick and too many other song writers collaborating w/ Liz. There are some tracks on the CD that I absolutely refuse to listen to, very sad. But it was during this time I got a chance to see Liz live for the 1st time. And funnily enough, she didn't perform too many songs off of "Back Slash". She was stellar, out of this world live. Liz came out in this tiny black negligee and this big old guitar and blew me away!

Then I fell back in love w/ "Somebody's Miracle". A quiet, mostly acoustic CD. It was adult, witty and a wee bit somber. Unfortunately, because of poor sales, Liz was dropped by her record label.

The other day I was tooling around on Wikipedia, it's pretty scary to get stuck in wiki-hole, and found Liz had released her latest album in July of this year on her website. "Funstyle" is a return of her wry, snarky, indie sound. Point of fact, it reminds me of Beck. Check it out, everyone loves free downloads.

I'll leave you w/ some words "And that's what this game is all about..."

Queen of the Reich

Morning pages morning pages! Mourning pages? I've got writer's block my beloved readers. My fabulous musician friend, Jason, suggested I start writing "morning pages" again. Basically, you sit and journal between 20 to 30 minutes every day. Yr pen does not leave the paper. It doesn't have to be linear or cohesive or make any sense at all. Just write. As Jason says, "Exlax for the brain"

Okie dokie.....

Last Sunday, we took a break from the camp site to go see Queensryche live. I saw them when I was 15! This time around, the show was a cabaret act. Half naked dancing chicks, drag queens, contortionists, trapezists. A great commentary about the artifice of celebrity, superficial love, style over substance. It was great! But it was not a show of their greatest hits. I only REALLY knew knew 5 songs and kinda knew 2 others.

One of the dancers, rubbed my back. Can't blame her, I looked smoking hot in my black shorts, black pin up tank top and green Doc Martens.

I also thought SB was gonna have to knock a motherfucker out! Some weirdo older guy (and by older I mean about 10 years older than myself) kept staring at me & called me a little sweetie. Then babbled about us being "oldest people in the club". Huh? What kind of pick up line is that? Plus, why hit on me at all? Pretty obvious SB and I are a couple.

Never dull moment in the life of Phairhead

What we do is What we do

Oh my golly, y'all! Sexybeast & I had the best time on Saturday night. We got to see DEVO live!!!!!!! They picked up exactly where they left off in 1989. It was fun and fast paced and engaging. Best of all SB didn't have to slap around any drunken assholes.

It was a great mix of new and old songs. They had on those ridiculous flower pot hats, the boiler suits & the syncopated technotic dance moves.

Here's the set list, you can't see the first few songs which were "Don't Shoot (I'm a Man)", "Peek A Boo" & " What we do". I was practically pissing my pants because they did some old faves of mine, "Uncontrollable Urge". It sounded amazing live!!! Also "Smart Patrol" which I didn't even know they perform live anymore.

Whoa! Booji (pronounced Boogie) Boy came out to sing the encore. For those of you that are not in the know (you pins!), Booji is a de-evolved human w/ the brain of an ape. He used to scare the hell out of me when I was younger. Do yrselves a favour, my awesome readers, youtube DEVO's old videos and check out the creepiness of Booji Boy.

The only issue I had the whole night was I got over heated and dehydrated. I thought I was going to pass out and sat down during the encore. Small price to pay to view greatness.

\m/

True confession time, I was a big metal dork when I was in high school. I wish I could say my first concert was The Cure but no no, it was a double bill of Tesla and Great White.

Of course, as with any obsession I had in my teens, I grew tired of metal. It seemed dated and corny and passe. All things I didn't want to be as I slowly remade myself.

Over the course of the past few days, I been downloading all my fave music from my youth. (for free but don't tell anyone!) I've gotten a few from Voivod, an awesome awesome prog thrash unit. It sounds like a futuristic robot beating up a car. I got to meet the leader singer when I 18. I made a total fool out of myself. I kept shaking his hand and saying "OH MY GOD! I LOVE YR MUSIC! I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO SINCE I WAS 13!" And some Pantera, cause I like it mean and dirty like them. And lucky me I saw them twice before they disbanded. And a bittersweet favourite, Queensryche. My "friends" and I listened to them ad nauseum. My best memory is driving up the Northway in K's Firebird to Lake George. She must have been doing 80 and we had the stereo at full volume. And we all had our fave members of the band that we crushed on, we had teenaged fantasies of running away to Seattle, the city Queensryche is based in. I loved rhythm guitarist Michael Wilton. He waved in my general direction when I saw them at the Knick Area (now the Time Union Center).

I feel like I've divulged a very dirty secret...

Rocking in the Free World

We hit up the mountains for the long weekend because, coincidentally enough, both our families have places up there. It was pretty quiet, I ate a lot of edamame. The water was fr-fr-freezing!

The highlight had to be listening to awesome classic rock in Sexybeast's truck. Yeah, that's right, I said truck. I rocked out to David Bowie and The Cars. It was the best sunny day I've had in a long time.

Sadly, the insects ate us alive...

Stay Positive

I love date night!

This Wednesday amidst the 86 degree weather, Sexybeast and I went out for a night on the town. Since I work in Albany until 5 pm, we agreed to meet at a restaurant near my office. We decided to check out Salsa Latina. We've never been and I've heard many many good things about the place (Thanks Albany Jane & Mr. Fussy!)I liked Salsa Latina immediately, big bar, cheerful yellow walls, a VERY clean bathroom. Sexybeast had run 6 miles that afternoon and was STARVING, I, myself, had light lunch. SB started w/ the Colombian style beef empanadas, I didn't try because I don't like the texture of shredded beef. I had the tortilla soup which was very flavourful but there was rice in it. Why? Completely unnecessary. SB had the special, chicken mole enchiladas, the sauce was fab, though sweeter than I've ever had. Not that that's a bad thing. I had chili colorado, chopped steak in a very SPICY sauce. Both plates looked like serving platters, lots of food. And, as per usual, there was the usual suspects of beans topped w/ cheese and rice. The margaritas were also a nice addition on super hot April evening.

If some of you might remember, I wrote a post some time ago about The Hold Steady. Last March, they played to a sold out audience at Valentine's. I was incensed that weren't able to go. But fate smiled upon me, as I scored tickets to see The Hold Steady at The LINDA. Lots and lots of hipsters were there. Seriously, is there a factory somewhere cranking out clones of apathetic looking guys w/ beards, glasses and an ironic sense of fashion?

The opening act was The Orange Band, they were OK. It just seemed like all of their songs sounded the same. So, about 2 songs into The Hold Steady's set, their amps died, right in the middle of my fave song, "Sequestered in Memphis". W/out missing a beat, they did a mini acoustic set.

I bought these super cute new black sandals. But after a full day of hiking up the uneven sidewalks on Central Ave, my tootsies were tired and blistered. Standing room only meant I sat my little butt on the cold tiled floor. And as it was a weekend night, we left at about 10:45, before the show ended.

Good times, good times...

Tunesday

I stole this post idea from my blogger wife Cheeks over at http://alltheleatherkidswereloud.blogspot.com. She's a lady and a scholar :D

1. Go to Ipod
2. Press shuffle
3.Press play. No cheating. No skipping.
4.Type the song title for each category that has randomly appeared on Ipod.

Enjoy!!!

Opening Credits: Little Shadow - Yeah Yeah Yeah's
A quiet way to my day.

Waking Up: Dear Diary 3 - Stephen Lynch
OK so it's going to be a totally sick and twisted day.

Average Day: Expectations - Belle & Sebastian
Don't listen to Jack Black. Belle & Sebastian is not sad bastard music.

First Date: Modern Romance - Yeah Yeah Yeah's
Does that mean I drink lots of whiskey, make out w/ you hard and then punch you in the face? Karen O style!

Love Scene: Vertical Photontheque - Stereolab
Tres French! And I don't speak French. They say it's the language of love.

Fight Scene: Tomorrow Never Knows - The Beatles
That would be one psychedelic fight! I personally want this song to be my wedding reception entrance song.

Breaking Up: My Weakness - Moby
Yes, Moby, you do understand my pain

Making Up: 12 - Alexi Murdoch
A cry while you do it song.

Secret Love: Splat - Bailterspace
"Stop wasting our time. Stop wasting our lives..." Maybe he's embarrassed of me.

Life's Okay: The Door Into Summer - The Monkees
I love love love Michael Nesmith's voice. Very wistful.

Mental Breakdown: Star Collector - The Monkees
HA! This is about a groupie. Perhaps one of those psycho clingy ones.

Driving: Salesman - The Monkees
3 Monkees' songs in a row? Ipod is in love w/ Davy Jones! Bu uh, traveling, salesman, sure it fits.

Deep Thought: Negra Leono - ?
Hmmmm yeah not so much.

FlashBack: Love in Plaster - The Hives
No comment

Partying: Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Fuck yeah!!!! Is it wrong that I have crush on big ol' Ce-Lo?

Happy Dance: Bang the Drum - Railroad Jerk
More like a song I had to listen to 50,000 times to get all the words. But there is a certain boppyness to it.

Regretting: Three Women - Stereolab
A manage of three? Although, women in friendships of three never work out. So yeah, regretful

Long Night Alone: Water Cuts My Hands- Mecca Normal
If I was suicidal...

Final Battle: Girls! Girls! Girls! - Liz Phair
Ha! Perfect. And I would get away w/ murder.

Death Scene: A Little More for Little You - The Hives
I would be happy to die to this song! So awesome!

Closing Credits: Tick - Yeah Yeah Yeah's
If only I was cool as Karen O.....

By the by people, I have soooooo many songs by various artistes, I don't know why Ipod decided to focus on such a core group. Hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

The Drab 4

Back in high school, I was a social outcast. Spit upon, reviled. I wish I could say I was exaggerating. And one thing that fueled my hatred of my classmates was my love of heavy metal. From ages13 to 18, before I figured myself out, metal was all consuming force in my life.

I started off w/ the light stuff, Skid Row, Extreme, Kik Tracee. Heavy on the pretty and cheese factor. When I began my love affair w/ angst, the music I loved grew darker and more complex, Voivod, Pantera, Danzig.

My enthusiasm for metal waned over time. It was something I looked upon w/ embarrassed fondness.

Then I met Sexybeast, a metal fanatic (though to be fair he loves Tom Waits and The Beatles too!). Being around each other, I was re-introduced into something I thought was long dead inside of me.

This past Saturday, I had the privilege of seeing Type O Negative. Self described as "goth-adelic", these boys are moody, hate filled creatures of the night. But the melodies, the lyrics! I was back in my 18 year old mind and it was GOOD. Having conquered many personal demons (and a serious cocaine addiction), Peter Steele sang every word w/a beautiful anguish that he has not been able to manage in many years.

On Sunday, we saw a double header of Mastodon, a weirdly multi-faceted band, that writes all concept albums. They performed Crack the Skye in it's entirety against the back drop of short film that followed the story. They really are visual band. I really couldn't explain the story, check Wikipedia, but it involves astral projection and Rasputin.

Many of you know my love of the one of the funniest adult cartoons in human existence, Metalocalypse. OMG! OMG! OMG! They were so fucking awesome!! They performed my fave song "Murmaider", a song about mermaid murder. Brutal! Essentially, the real band played on stage while Dethklok performed on a big screen behind them.

I had a rockin' weekend. How ' bout you?

In Bar Light, She Looked All Right. In Day Light, She Looked Desperate.

When I went to Boston to visit my brother Pablo, he finally gave me and SexyBeast our X-mas gifts. Finally! And bonus, I got more music.

However, I didn't know what the hell he gave me! Apparently, Pablo and Tamantha (my sister-in-law) we're inspired by a feature on "Sunday Morning", The Best Music of '08 that you've Never Heard of.

Pablo took a chance and it paid off. I love "The Mande Variations" by Toumani Diabate, a Malinese man that plays the kora. It's beautiful chill out music for Sunday reading the paper and drinking White Russians until you pass out on the couch. It's complex and sad and lovely.

And CD #2 is The Hold Steady and "Stay Positive". HOLY GOD!!! The first track, "Constructive Summer", sounds like "Jail Guitar Doors" by the orgasmically wonderful The Clash. Oh, wait! What did Craig Finn just sing? "Raise a toast to Saint Joe Strummer..." My love for The Hold Steady knows no bounds. They're gruff and dirty and honest. If Toumani Diabate is Sunday, then The Hold Steady is a muggy Friday night in June, hanging out in dive bars and slamming shots of Jagermeister.

Now, you must immediately purchase this fine music. Go. Now.

Shock me Like an Electric Eel

Last month I posted about the lack of new music in my life 'cause I'm poor. Well, the Amazon gods heard my prayers because SexyBeast's parents gave me an Amazon giftcard for X-mas.

Then an anvil of inspiration smacked me on my cranium. Why go through the hassle of purchasing CD's? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get the MP3's to put right onto my (SexyBeast's) ipod? What can I say, I'm slow to adapting to new technologies.

First to my eager listening ears is the new Stereolab "Chemical Chords". For those of you not in the know, Stereolab is an obscure British band that utilizes lots of Moog synthesisers and most of lyrics are about anarchy, social injustice and pain. All set to a boppy beat and sung in French. I don't speak French. But I have adored Stereolab since 1994. One day I will see them live and then I can die.

Next up is Yeah Yeah Yeah's 2002 release "Fever to Tell". Yes I know I'm late arriving to the party but sometimes I forget how amazingly awesome Yeah Yeah Yeah's are. Karen O's voice is phenomenal. She gives me shivers. Plus it's a great, balls out rockin' record. Maybe 3 years from now I'll get another one of their MP3's : )

And last but certainly not least, "Oracular Spectacular" by MGMT. Holy crap I love love love these guys. WEQX, my local station, played the hell out of their single "Time to Pretend" this past summer. It enveloped me, I was hypnotized. Then I became obsessed with "Electric Feel". I really enjoy singing it at the top of my lungs. The whole album is fantastic and surprisingly all of the songs sound absolutely nothing alike and yet not all over the place and crazy, just experimental. The only drawback, MGMT looks like a bunch of douchebags. The singer dude takes ties or random pieces of fabric and ties them around his head like a 1980's tennis player. DOUCHE!

And just when I thought it couldn't get any better, check my post next week. : )

It's Cool to Know Nothin'!

I am totally totally obsessed with the new Kaiser Chiefs single "Never Miss a Beat". It's loud, crunchy and very sing-along-able. Unfortunately, I am having my own economic crisis and I don't see the end anytime soon, so the best I can hope for is the Amazon gift certificate fairy to visit me in the middle of the night.

Then I got to thinking about all the other cool music out there that I do not own.

1. Bob Mould- he put a CD months ago. For those of you not in the know, Bob is a fantastic musician who was a part of the post-punk band Husker Du in the '80's and then power pop band Sugar in the '90's. He has integrity.

2. Vampire Weekend- cute white nerds from NYU that make catchy sorta ska like danceable songs. Check out the new single "Kids don't Stand a Chance".

3. Death Cab for Cutie- been around for years, mopey stare at yr shoes music. The new CD came out at the beginning of the year and I have been dying to hear it in it's entirety.

4. The Ting Tings- snotty British boppy sound. Good stuff!

There are thousands of others that I cannot name as I don't have enough room or time. I'm embarrassed to say there is stuff out from 10 + years ago that I haven't purchased yet (Yeah Yeah Yeahs). And the all the stuff I had on cassette that I never converted over (The Clash, mother fuckin' Danzig). Where are you Amazon fairy?

Weasel Pot Pie

2 weeks ago Sexy Beast, some friends and myself went to the vast wasteland that is Northern Lights, a bar/music venue. It's stinky, dark, the AC leaks and the drinks are overpriced. Sexy Beast wanted a Red Bull and vodka, it was 10 bucks! And they didn't even use Red Bull but Monster.

Anyway, I digress, the occasion for going to that dive was to see Buckethead. He is a guitar virtuoso. He did things to that instrument that I didn't think were possible. Buckethead never speaks, always remains in character. He wasn't wearing his KFC bucket but a white sand pail and a navy blue boiler suit. Plus Sexy Beast held me up to the see the stage, a first for me.

The only crap thing about the evening was Buckethead's opening act, this lame-o was called That One Guy. He played an instrument that he invented, something called a Magic Stick. It was more like Magic Dildo. He basically slapped gigantic phallus around, sounded like some throwing beer bottles on a drum head. That jackass played his awful music for 1 hour. 1 hour! Since when does the opening act ever do that.

To cap off the night we headed to TGI Friday's as it was the only place open. Normally I HATE chain restaurants but the cheeseburger was pretty damn tasty.

mmmmm burger *drool drool*

Who's got the Crack?

I have a little spring in my step, which quite strange as I have a head cold that won't quit and had a looooooonnnnnnggg ass day at work. I owe it all to Ms. Kimya Dawson. Like most Americans I never listened to her or many other projects (Moldy Peaches, Antsy Pants, et.al.) until the Juno soundtrack came out. (see an older post re: Michael Sera) She's quirky and smart and complicated. I admire her song writing style, they may sound like nursery rhymes but they are so textured and full of joy, pain, angst and everything in between. She's kinda like that kid you went to high school with that completely off beat and reveled in it.

You know what else I love about Kimya, she's totally not a conventional beauty, however, there's something haunting and graceful about her. Plus, she has the world's chubbiest, happiest baby named Panda.

I'm kicking myself for not going to her show to support The Albany New School but as I remember, I was running on empty that particular week and I had already spent my hard earned bucks on going to a screening of the Joe Strummer documentary. Joe is number one in my book. Please keep yr eyes peeled for an upcoming Clash post. Not to mention the show was mid-week. Kimya please I'm an old lady that has to work for a living, keep yr shows limited to the weekends.

Gotta go and finish off my day w/ a bottle of Nyquil.
